Oxford. 13 Jahre nach dem Relaunch der britischen Marke Mini durch BMW läuft heute das dreimillionste Fahrzeug im Stammwerk Oxford vom Band. Zwei Millionen der in Großbritannien produzierten Modelle wurden in 113 Länder exportiert. Größter Mini-Markt sind die USA: "Mehr als 21 Prozent unserer Fahrzeuge werden in den USA verkauft", sagte Peter Schwarzenbauer, im BMW-Vorstand unter anderem für die Marke Mini zuständig, bei einer Feier im Werk Oxford. "Großbritannien ist der zweitgrößte Markt – wir verkaufen einen von sechs Minis hier." Deutschland ist der drittgrößte Markt, gefolgt von China.
In Oxford werden täglich 1000 Einheiten des Kultautos gefertigt. "Das bedeutet, das jede Minute ein Mini vom Band läuft", so BMW-Produktionsvorstand Harald Krüger. "Vier von fünf Mini gehen in den Export." In dem Werk sind mittlerweile 4000 Menschen beschäftigt, die im Drei-Schicht-Betrieb arbeiten. Zum Produktionsstart 2001 fertigten 2400 Mitarbeiter im Einschichtbetrieb 300 Einheiten pro Tag.BMW hat seit dem Jahr 2000 rund 1,75 Milliarden Pfund in seine drei britischen Standorte investiert, davon 750 Millionen Pfund im Zeitraum 2012 bis 2015.Mini hat drei Millionen Autos produziert
2013 wurden exakt 303.177 Fahrzeuge der Marke Mini gefertigt. In Oxford waren es 175.986, dort werden die Modelle Hatch, Cabrio, Clubman und Roadster und Coupé gebaut. Da BMW die Marke Mini weiter ausbauen will, hat der Hersteller weitere Produktionskapazitäten erschlossen. Im Werk Oxford können mittelfristig jährlich 250.000 Mini vom Band laufen, beim österreichischen Auftragsfertiger Magna Steyr in Graz werden derzeit die SUVs Countryman und Paceman produziert, 2013 waren es 125.559 Einheiten. In weiteren Werken in Asien wie beispielsweise in der indischen Fabrik in Chennai wurden insgesamt 1632 Mini produziert.
Der dreitürige Mini Hatch, der im November 2013 seinen Produktionsstart in Oxford hatte und Mitte März 2014 auf den Markt kam, wird seit Mitte Juli dieses Jahres auch beim Auftragsfertiger VDL Nedcar in den Niederlanden gebaut. Mini ist der einzige Autohersteller, der Serienfahrzeuge im Zuge einer Auftragsfertigung in den Niederlanden bauen lässt.
BMW hatte Nedcar gewählt, weil das Werk in Born aus logistischer Sicht viele Vorteile bietet. Den Münchner Autohersteller überzeugte die Nähe zum Mini-Produktionsdreieck Oxford, Swindon (Press- und Komponentenwerk) und Hams Hall (Motorenfabrik). Die geplante Kapazität bei Nedcar umfasst nach Angaben von BMW in diesem Jahr einen fünfstelligen Bereich.
