München. Zipse galt von Anfang an als einer der Top-Kandidaten für den Posten des Produktionschefs. Der Aufsichtsrat wählte ihn geschlossen – alle 20 Stimmen galten ihm. Der 51-Jährige wird intern sehr geschätzt. In seiner aktuellen Funktion als Leiter Konzernplanung und Produktstrategie hat er seinen Teil dazu beigetragen, die Weichen für die Zukunft des Unternehmens zu stellen. Zudem arbeitet er seit 24 Jahren für den Autobauer und kennt das weltweite Produktionsnetzwerk aus dem Effeff. Doch langjährige Erfahrungen bei BMW besitzen auch seine internen Mitbewerber um diese Position. Ein wichtiger Punkt für seine Wahl war die hohe Führungskompetenz, die ihm Weggefährten bescheinigen. „Wenn er in einer Gruppe von Menschen steht, schafft er es, sie für seine Themen zu begeistern“, erzählt ein ehemaliger Kollege. Auffallend sei zudem, wie schnell er Fakten analysieren könne. Dazu beigetragen haben dürfte sein Studium der Mathematik und Informatik, das er im amerikanischen Salt Lake City absolvierte. Danach widmete sich der gebürtige Heidelberger in Darmstadt dem Maschinenbau und machte anschließend seinen MBA. Dass einer seiner beiden Söhne jetzt auch Maschinenbau studiert, freut den Ingenieur. Gedrängt habe er ihn dazu aber nicht, versichert der erklärte Familienmensch. Jemanden zu drängen ist seine Sache ohnehin nicht. Zipse gilt als besonnener Mann. Seine Mitarbeiter schätzen an ihm, dass er auch in Stresssituationen immer ruhig bleibt. Er entspanne sich zu Hause bei der Gartenarbeit, erzählt der Manager. In seiner langjährigen Tätigkeit für BMW hätten ihm die Auslandsaufenthalte besonders gut gefallen – im BMW-Werk im südafrikanischen Rosslyn hatte er verschiedene Führungsfunktionen in der Produktion inne, bevor er 2007 als Werkleiter zur Mini-Fabrik ins britische Oxford wechselte. Ins Ausland wird er auch als Vorstand viel reisen: Die Fertigung in Brasilien läuft gerade an, das neue BMW-Werk in Mexiko startet 2019. Bei dem Münchner Autobauer schafft es ein Produktionschef oft an die Konzernspitze – wie Harald Krüger, Norbert Reithofer oder Joachim Milberg. Ob Zipse das auch noch gelingt, ist fraglich: Der neue BMW-Boss Krüger ist erst 49 Jahre alt – und damit anderthalb Jahre jünger als Zipse.

Für BMW um die Welt
Auf die Frage, warum er sich so gerne in der Produktion aufhält, hat Oliver Zipse einmal gesagt: „Weil dort die meisten Menschen arbeiten.“ Bald ist er Herr über 51.000 Mitarbeiter im Produktionsressort von BMW. Mit der Hauptversammlung am 13. Mai wird er Nachfolger von Produktionsvorstand Harald Krüger, der an die Spitze des Münchner Autobauers rückt.
