Kopenhagen. Zwei Szenarien werden in der BMW-Zentrale durchgespielt: die Ausweitung der Palette auf zehn Modelle und die Konzentration auf die beiden lukrativen Kernmodelle. Derzeit sind es sieben Mini-Derivate. Für den Ausbau spricht die neue UKL-Plattform (UKL für Untere Klasse), die sich künftige Minis mit den frontgetriebenen BMW-Fahrzeugen unterhalb des Dreier teilen. Der Mini Hatch (Steilheck) der dritten Generation, der Mitte März auf den Markt gekommen ist, nutzt als Erster diese Architektur. „Wir können jetzt Fahrzeuge zwischen 3,80 und 4,50 Metern Länge bauen“, so Schwarzenbauer. Einsparungen bei Entwicklung, Einkauf und Produktion seien schon deutlich spürbar. Beschlossen wurde bereits die Serienumsetzung der Studie Clubman Concept, die 26 Zentimeter länger als die aktuelle Kombi-Version ist. Für eine Reduzierung des Produktangebots spricht, dass längst nicht alle sieben Mini-Versionen erfolgreich sind. Volumenträger sind nur zwei von ihnen. 2013 verkauften die Münchner rund 305.000 Einheiten des Kultfahrzeugs, davon 128.478 Hatch und 101.897 Countryman. Das Cabrio kam auf 21.164 Stück, vom Clubman wurden 21.030 Einheiten abgesetzt. Im Gegensatz zu ihrem größeren Bruder Countryman kommt die Coupé-Variante Paceman nur auf kleine Stückzahlen – von ihm wurden 2013 weltweit nur 14.687 Autos verkauft. Am schlechtesten lief das Coupé mit 8436. Countryman und Paceman stehen auf derselben Plattform und werden beim Auftragsfertiger Magna Steyr in Graz gebaut. Allerdings läuft der Vertrag mit der Fertigung der aktuellen Modelle aus. Wo die nächste Generation auf der neuen Architektur produziert wird, lässt BMW noch offen. „Wir können uns durchaus vorstellen, Countryman und Paceman weiterhin bei Magna zu bauen“, so Schwarzenbauer. Hoffnungen auf den Zuschlag macht sich auch der Auftragsfertiger Nedcar. Im niederländischen Born startet am 17. Juli die Produktion des Hatch, das Cabrio soll voraussichtlich Ende 2015 folgen. In den ersten fünf Monaten 2014 ist der Mini-Absatz um 12,4 Prozent auf 103.158 Einheiten gesunken. Dennoch ist Schwarzenbauer überzeugt, im Gesamtjahr den Verkauf von 2013 zu übertreffen. Helfen sollen dabei vor allem der neue Hatch und der überarbeitete Countryman. Der größte Markt der britischen Kultmarke sind die USA, gefolgt von Großbritannien, Deutschland und China. Dort sieht Schwarzenbauer langfristig noch ein riesengroßes Potenzial. In China gebe es rund 300 Städte mit 500.000 bis eine Million Einwohner, die überhaupt noch nicht von den deutschen Premiummarken erschlossen worden seien.
Markenstrategie noch offen
Mini muss nicht maxi werden
Immer mehr und immer größere Modelle – das muss nicht die künftige Ausrichtung der Marke Mini sein. „Wir haben die Strategie noch nicht zu Ende diskutiert“, sagte BMW-Vorstand Peter Schwarzenbauer, in dessen Zuständigkeitsbereich Mini fällt, am Rande einer Fahrvorstellung in Kopenhagen.
