Für den Schlussspurt im Smoking setzen die Briten einmal mehr auf ihren sündig-schönen W12-Motor mit feudalen 6,0-Litern Hubraum, dem sie nochmal etwas mehr Leistung abgerungen haben. Statt beim Vorgänger 635 PS stehen nun 659 PS im Datenblatt, und 900 Nm sorgen für eine einzigartige Mischung aus Nonchalance und Noblesse, die sich mit einem souveränen Lächeln über alle physikalischen Gesetzmäßigkeiten hinweg setzt: Es braucht deshalb nicht viel mehr als einen Schatten auf dem wuchtigen Fahrpedal, dann lösen sich die knapp drei Tonnen Lebendgewicht in Wohlgefallen auf und der Bentley fliegt dem Horizont entgegen: 3,6 Sekunden bis Tempo 100 und bei Vollgas 335 km/h – und das vollkommen mühelose, ohne Aufregung oder gar Anstrengung. Wo andere Autos dieses Kalibers längst aus dem letzten Loch pfeifen der zumindest ein großes Spektakel machen, muss man beim Bentley schon die Launchcontrol aktivieren, den Motor ans Limit drehen und die Reifen kreischen lassen, um ein wenig Aufmerksamkeit zu generieren.
Aber zum "dynamischsten Straßenauto in 101 Jahren Bentley-Geschichte" wird der Speed nicht allein wegen des Powerpacks unter der Haube. Sondern das Versprechen einer ausgesprochen flotten Landpartie untermauern die Briten mit ihrer neuen Hinterradlenkung, einer etwas strafferen Programmierung für die 3-Kammer-Luftfederung, schnelleren Gangwechseln für die achtstufige Doppelkupplung und dem Ersteinsatz für ein elektronisch geregeltes Sperrdifferential an der Hinterachse. So schwinden nicht nur die Pfunde, die bei diesem Dickschiff in Lack und Leder hier eher Zentner sind. Sondern es schrumpft auch das Format und der immerhin 4,85 Meter lange Luxusliner fühlt sich plötzlich überraschend handlich an. Wer dann noch ins sportliche Fahrprofil wechselt, profitiert von einer spürbar größeren Spreizung der Charaktere, spürt die etwas längere Leine der wachsamen Assistenten und gleitet mit einem bisweilen ziemlich lasziven Heckschwung durch die Landschaft. Und damit die Fuhre auch flott wieder zum Stehen kommt, glühen in den 21-Zöllern riesige Bremsscheiben aus einer neuen Karbon-Keramik-Mischung, die nicht nur mehr biss haben, sondern obendrein noch 33 Kilo weniger wiegen. Und natürlich sind sie die größten, die bislang in einem Serienauto eingebaut wurden.
