Ein Brennstoffzellenfahrzeug mit Wasserstofftanks muss groß sein und lohnt sich nur bei schweren LKWs - dieser Meinung ist bislang noch ein Großteil der Experten aus der Autobranche.
Ingenieure des Fraunhofer-Institut für Werkzeugmaschinen und Umformtechnik IWU) in Chemnitz und Tüftler der tschechischen technischen Universtität in Prag sind da aber ganz anderer Meinung. Sie haben das Projekt "Hydrocycle" gestartet - das erste Brennstoffzellen-Motorrad der Welt.
Bis Ende 2025 will das Konsortium ein fahrfähiges Motorrad als Demonstrator aufbauen, das den europäischen Zulassungs- und Zertifizierungsvorschriften genügt. Die größte Herausforderung ist die Konstruktion einer extrem kompakten Brennstoffzelle mit ausreichender Leistung. Der Wasserstoff-Tank dagegen kann sehr klein ausfallen: Mit nur einem Kilogramm H2 könnte ein H2-Motorrad bereits mehrere hundert Kilometer weit fahren.
