So langsam sind sie es leid in Stuttgart. Zwar rühmen sie sich mit der S-Klasse der erfolgreichsten Luxuslimousine der Welt und haben diesen Anspruch mit dem Generationswechsel für ihr Flaggschiff gerade noch einmal untermauert. Doch beim Wettrüsten auf der Buckelpiste musste Mercedes bislang tatenlos zusehen. Nicht dass sich GLE und GLS schlecht verkauften, von der legendären G-Klasse ganz zu schweigen. Aber während Bentley mit dem Bentayga und Rolls-Royce mit dem Cullinan auch SUVs für Sehr-Viel-Besserverdiener anbieten und davon längst mehr verkaufen als von ihren Limousinen, war den Dickschiffen von Daimler der Smoking bislang versagt, Aber damit ist jetzt Schluss. Denn parallel zur neuen S-Klasse kommt jetzt zum ersten Mal auch der GLS als Maybach auf den Markt.
Damit man das Prunkstück für Prachtstraßen und Pampa trotz der engen Verwandtschaft mit der schnöden Großserie auf Anhieb erkennt, trägt der GLS stolz den Maybach-Grill im Nadelstreifen-Design und darunter mehr Chrom vor den Lufteinlässen als die amerikanische Rapperszene Gold um den Hals. Dazu gibt's breit verchromte Rahmen um die Scheibe und - ein entsprechendes Selbstbewusstsein vorausgesetzt - auch die nur den Maybach-Modellen vorbehaltene Zweifarblackierung. Der Clou sind allerdings die beiden riesigen Trittbretter von mehr als zwei Metern Länge und 20 Zentimetern Breite, die sich samt LED-Beleuchtung in einem faszinierenden Spektakel unter dem Wagenboden hervorschieben, sobald sich die Türen öffnen. Denn selbst wenn der Maybach einen Knicks macht und sich die Luftfederung um drei Zentimeter absenkt, mag Mercedes dem gemeinen Krösus so eine unbequeme Kletterei offenbar nicht ohne Aufstiegshilfe zumuten.
